Miniature Indicator Lamps

MILs are critical to all different types of industries, and an increasing need for smaller, stronger, and more energy-efficient devices is leading to the rapid growth of this lighting sector. The market for miniature indicator lamps is expected to grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 1-3% in the forecast period of 2017-2023. The biggest driver for these lamps is an increased demand for robust miniature lamps with long lifespans, reduced heat emissions, and fewer emissions of carbon dioxide. Besides simple lighting, in the future, MIL devices are envisioned to provide non-visual application-specific services.

Miniature Indicator Lamps. Miniature indicator lamps (MILs), also known as subminiature lamps, are small light sources that are widely used as status indicating lights in virtually every type of industry. MILs generally come in four base types: wire terminal, flange, avalanche, and bi-pin, with bi-pin being the most common. MILs are made using different manufacturing processes, such as glass making and welding, glass drawing, and glass forming, to yield different shapes and designs. The type of bulb that should be used depends on the application and the corresponding base required.

Miniature Indicator Lamps

Applications of Miniature Indicator Lamps

Strict application requirements can also be met with a number of different versions that utilize technology including neon, incandescent, micro incandescent, halogen, and LED. These types are also available in units with operational and/or life expectations dependent upon the requirement. Speed to market design and solutions are also available. With proper application requirements and regulatory restrictions, there are combinations of product features available to meet most application requirements. Non-standard combinations can also be accommodated though additional development requirements. As a trusted partner, all these products are manufactured by one of the world's leading lighting and new lighting innovation and sales companies.

Miniature indicator lamps are used in many places where indication status needs to be clearly shown to a user. For example: oven and range controls, microwave touch panels, audio/video security, commercial appliances, security alarm systems, elevator systems, mass transit vehicles, security key switches, LCN door openers, consumer electronics, turn knobs, touch screen clocks, digital gas gauges, dental equipment, stage and studio, gym equipment, and many more places where the manufacturer wishes to show the status of the machine to the user. Most miniature indicator lamps are for industrial, OEM status indication where long-term reliability is a must.

Factors to Consider when Choosing Miniature Indicator Lamps

By far the most popular miniature lamp for indicators is the incandescent bulb. Because incandescent lamps have been in use for quite some time, the performance of known lamp types is very predictable. Also, because the drift of controlled parameters is studied by the lamp suppliers thoroughly, the prediction of the performance to be expected from a new lamp is not difficult. There are some new types available with a whiter light that is closer to the color of light being emitted by the light emitting diode. There is an advantage to the incandescent miniatures in that due to their aging, the changes in color, intensity, and life can be forecast. There is an impression made by many lamp buyers and specifiers that all miniature incandescent lamps are alike and interchangeable. There are a few important tools needed to quantify differences in performance that most consumer users are not ordinarily given. Most consumer users are segregated entirely from these measurements, by specifications that have been developed over the years by some Consumer Product Standardization Subcommittee 120-1 and by the end product assemblers providing a particular manufacturer's part.

Miniature indicator lamps are those small, incandescent bulbs with wire leads or terminals that are commonly used as indicators when they are installed in electrical or electronic devices. There are several types and sizes of incandescent lamp devices that are used for this specific purpose. The mechanical outlines of several types were defined in the great days when electronics filled the large steel and aluminum racks of voice and data switching systems. Depending on the size, color, shape, and electrical characteristics of an indicator that is required to signal some event, there will be many types of incandescent lamp devices to select from. For space-qualified applications, that use the same electrical power of a new modern electronic tool but bolt to square root of 7 different larger segments of original rack area of specified phone systems, there will be one or two bulb designs from the same worldwide web of companies.
